The Basic Rules of Mahjong Solitaire

Have you ever played mahjong solitaire? How is it different from the classic mahjong or from any other variations?

Mahjong solitaire, also known in different names such as Shanghai solitaire, computer mahjong, and mahjong. It uses a deck of mahjong tiles instead of cards. The 144 tiles are organized in a special four-layer The 144 tiles are arranged in a special four-layer framework with their faces in an upward position. The tiles which are exposed can be moved from left to right without destroying the position of other tiles.

Exposed couple of similar tiles (flower tiles belonging to the same set is said to be identical tiles) are eliminated from the grid individually at a certain period, slowly displaying the lower level of tiles available for play. The objective of the game is to free the grid by forming pairs of tiles. The game comes to an end when either the grid has been emptied or no more exposed pairs are left to play.

Though Shanghai solitaire can be played with real mahjong tiles and a unique wooden casing for design, it is commonly played in an electronic manner as a computer game. This eliminates the tedious task of setting-up the grid as well as the tendency to cheat.

Some computer Mahjong games provide additional options like the feature to replace the deck of tiles and patterns from the original tiles to flowers, jewels or another item that may be more convenient to pair in a simple glance, to play a group of various designs with improving difficulty level (commonly assigned Chinese names which may include 'the ox' or 'the snake'), or "wildcard tiles" and others that are designed for special purposed.

Such games also provide discretionary time limit as well as tips and cheat features such as the ability to locate a pair for you, or to revert or cancel previous moves. In addition, most executions of the game set-up the tiles in such a manner that the games can be easily solved in less than one way.

Mahjong solitaire can be played individually or doubles, in which case the object becomes accumulation of most pairs, or to be the last person to obtain identical tiles.

The players should find fresh tiles with each pair eliminated. Randomly selecting clear pairs, like tiles from the top grid, will most of the time pave the way for a premature conclusion of the game, by leaving important tiles uncovered.
